Underground
“Underground” is a site-responsive textile installation by Vivien Carolyn Reinert developed for TheSmallest Gallery in Soho. Responding to the four stations framing Soho - Oxford Circus, Piccadilly Circus, Tottenham Court Road, and Leicester Square. The project translates transit architecture into layered, immersive compositions. Utilising quilting and embroidery on industrial materials like nylon, mesh, vinyl, and reflective surfaces as well as ropes and eyelets, the work captures the city’s physical pulse. Suspended at varying depths, these tactile panels shift in perspective as viewers pass by, mirroring how we drift through public "non-places." Animated by shifting lighting that evokes passing trains, the installation invites us to slow down, offering a poignant moment of stillness within constant motion.

About the artist:
Vivien Carolyn Reinert is a London-based mixed-media artist. Upon graduating from Central Saint Martins and the Royal College of Art (MA Textiles, 2021), she worked for iconic design houses Liberty and Conran and Partners before launching her full-time practice in 2024. Reinert explores the power of visual tone and the psychological mapping of public spaces, dissecting the friction between virtual hyper-connectivity and physical disconnect. Her work bridges fine craft with fine art, having been exhibited at London Design and Craft Weeks, alongside recent prominent commissions for Cunard’s luxury flagship, Queen Anne.
